Using context means understanding the connection between the words, phrases, and sentences in a reading passage. The words surrounding an unfamiliar word help determine its meaning. READING PASSAGES Each card has four short, one paragraph reading passages. Two of the sentences have missing words. Three words are offered as possibilities. Students must pay attention to all of the words in the paragraph to determine which word best completes each sentence. The reading passages are arranged in ascending order. The progression allows students to begin at a lower reading level (Card 1a) and move on to higher levels (Card 8b) as their skills improve.
